Who doesn’t hate Mondays? I know I used to for a long time until I discovered a way to beat the beginning of the weekday blues. If you work Monday through Friday like the vast majority of workers do, your least favorite day is probably that day that starts with an “M.” However, it doesn’t have to be that way for everyone if you can be honest about why you feel that way and if you make a plan on how to do something about it.
I’m a firm believer in enjoying life to its fullest so it made sense to me a few months back to take a good look at how I could improve my outlook and feel better when the work week began. I realized it was easier to make an adjustment than I thought and everything after that fell perfectly into place.
Monday, Monday, I Can Finally Trust That Day
You may remember that classic Mamas and the Papas song crying about how you can’t trust Mondays but have you stopped to wonder why the song was written in the first place? It was penned by Band member John Phillips and although it has several possible meanings open for interpretation, the song touches a nerve in almost all of us because it’s the first day back from a weekend of having fun.
If you are like me and you love your weekends, the start of the work week is probably your least favorite time throughout the year. You go to happy hour or a sporting event on Friday night, you may hang out with your friends at a club, party or local pub on Saturday, and you may be taking advantage of Sundays to work on your tan at the beach or pool or sitting around and enjoying a barbecue. Regardless, even if you’re a parent and are spending time with your family, if you mix in alcohol during that time, you are working your way towards a Monday that can serve only one purpose; to recover from the weekend!
Therein lies the problem for many folks. It’s the same dilemma I faced for years and one little adjustment changed my life for good.
I used to be one of those weekend warriors who would never turn down the chance to sip a few beers on the weekend no matter where I went. As I got a little older and wiser, I moved onto Cruzan rum and Diet Cokes and loved it not only for the taste, but for the little buzz I would get from them while socializing and enjoying life in general.
One morning I woke up on a Monday with a slight hangover from a Sunday all-out barbecue and I had to call in sick from work. That was the last straw! I decide to make a change right there and then. No, it wasn’t the first time I called in and missed work and that, my friends, was the biggest reason I made a pact with myself to make that change.
These days, I rarely drink socially and I never drink alcohol on Sundays. I can go to my uncle Travis’ house on the weekend during the NFL football season and although he puts on the greatest barbecues football weekend history has ever known complete with any type of alcohol you can think of, I simply pass (no pun intended) when he shoves a Budweiser beer in my face. I have made a promise to myself that can never be broken.
On the flip side, every now and then I can totally cut loose on a Friday or Saturday and party as hard as I want to and still feel great when Monday morning rolls around. I enjoy my weekends immensely. I oftentimes look forward to a particular weekend knowing I am going to have the time of my life.
I am enjoying life more than ever before because I don’t feel like crap when the work week begins. “I hate Mondays” has turned into “I can’t wait to get to work” so I can have my cup of Starbucks coffee, get the job done, work out at the gym for thirty minutes afterwards and come home to enjoy my wife and kids. I owe this to simply “taking it a little easier” and staying off my feet as much as possible on Sundays.
