Topgolf Careers and Job Application Guide

There are many long-term Topgolf careers to consider if you prefer a fast-paced, active, and enjoyable work environment.

(Updated March 29, 2021) For people who live an active life, few jobs could be more fun than any of the Topgolf careers available.  What could be more fun than a golf wonderland featuring over 100 hitting bay practice stations as well as full-service bars and restaurants, and over 200 high definition televisions?

You can add to that a rooftop terrace where you can:

  • Hang out with your family and  friends
  • Private meeting rooms for companies who want to entertain their employees and clients
  • Free Wi-fi

It’s easy to see how an organization like this needs to constantly hire employees to fill all of its available positions.

Working at Topgolf

One of the most important things you want to find out before you work anywhere is how the working conditions are. What kind of environment are you going to be working in? Keep in mind you’re going to be on your feet at least 8 hours a day?

The reviews given by past and present Topgolf employees are slightly higher than average.

Here are the pros and cons:

Pros

  • You work in a very enjoyable environment
  • Management is flexible and works around your schedule
  • Your work days go by quickly because you are so busy all the time
  • You can move up to management quickly if you show leadership abilities and work hard

  • You have to work on your feet throughout your entire shift

  • Some employees have to work very late into the night
  • Many complaints about managers showing favoritism

Is Topgolf hiring?

With currently over 50 locations across the United States as well as 3 in the UK and 1 in Mexico and Australia, chances are Topgolf is hiring if you have one in your area.

Just about every Topgolf location needs over 100 employees to make the operation run smoothly. Additionally, since this company hires a lot of young workers, the employee turnover is pretty high.

This gives anyone a great chance to join this company.

Topgolf Employment Opportunities

Topgolf has many associate positions available at any given time. Below, I have assembled the list of some of the most common jobs you can get:

Topgolf Guest Services

This is a position where you’re going to assist your customers to enjoy themselves while they’re playing the Topgolf game in their assigned bay.

In this job, you’re going to be interacting quite a bit with customers, so this job requires workers who are personable and patient. Don’t be surprised if you show up to work one day and are given a different assignment for the day in order to cover for a “runner” who didn’t show up for work.

This job gives you a chance to get a taste of the different jobs available as an associate in your facility.

Topgolf Food Runner

This is a job where you’re going to be taking food orders from the kitchen. You will then deliver them to the customers seated at the tables.

It is a very physical job where you’re going to be climbing up and downstairs. Therefore, it’s important to be in good physical shape.

If you’re not in great physical shape, your health can definitely improve. The physical work you will do in this position will benefit you but it just might take a while to get used to it!

This job typically attracts 16 and 17-year-olds either on a part-time or full-time basis.

Topgolf Server

Also known as a Topgolf bay host, this job requires you to serve the guests who are located in the golf ball hitting bays.

This, like many other associate positions, can be an entry-level job. However, you need to quickly familiarize yourself with the menu and you need to have the ability to treat your customers to the best snack and dining experience possible.

Topgolf prefers their servers to have at least 1 year of experience, but it is not necessary as long as you are someone who is self-motivated and has a strong work ethic.

Topgolf Bartender

This is another job that would normally require experience at any other bar or restaurant but it’s actually possible to land this job at the entry-level. The job requires you to have knowledge of the different types of liquors, beer, and wine.

You’re going to be concentrating on providing the absolute best customer service possible while maintaining a very appealing and clean bar area.

Other common guest service positions offered at Topgolf are barback, busser, and drink runner. These jobs are all self-explanatory and they are all entry-level.

Topgolf Team Lead

Also known as a shift leader, this team lead position is all about guiding your team of associates to success in profitability under the supervision of your management team. In fact, at times, you will be the one running the facility operations.

This is a very active position that will also involve developing and training new associates, opening and closing the facility, and helping out with the scheduling of shifts.

The requirements for this position are a high school diploma or GED. You also have to be able to work flexible schedules and have the ability to obtain the necessary licenses as required by your particular store.

Topgolf Golf Instructor

As a golf instructor, you will be expected to hold group sessions as well as individual lessons. When there are large group events, you will be the one providing guidance and instruction.

This job requires at least 1 to 2 years of golf instructor experience and if you have a PGA membership, that’s a big plus, too. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred but it is not a requirement.

Topgolf Sous Chef

This is a position where you will be front and center, guiding your staff members to providing the best culinary creations for your customers. You will have to pay close attention to the details of the food you create to make sure it meets the standards set forth by Topgolf.

It’s preferable to have a Bachelor’s degree for this position or at least a culinary degree along with some culinary management experience.

Topgolf Executive Sous Chef

This position is one step higher than that of a sous chef and the responsibilities that go with this job are much more complicated! As an executive sous chef at TopGolf, you will be assisting the executive chef, monitoring all the inventory in your department, and even participate in menu planning and pricing!

The requirements for this position are an impressive 5 years of culinary management experience and you also have to have experience in managing costs associated with a restaurant business.

Topgolf Manager Careers

There are many management jobs available at any particular Topgolf location. The following are some of the department manager positions offered (simply place the word “manager” after each of these entries):

  • Hospitality
  • Golf Services
  • Chef
  • Facilities
  • Operations
  • Food and Beverage
  • Front of House
  • Sales Account

All of these department manager jobs require having to report to and answer your operations manager in order to run a smooth operation in your respective department.

Topgolf Operations Manager (General Manager)

This prestigious position will place plenty of responsibility upon your shoulders because you will be the one to ensure your facility is profitable and successful all around.

You will be working with your department managers and you’ll guide and mentor them to leading their team of associates to success. You’ll set sales goals and ensure your managers and team members meet and exceed those goals.

The requirements for this position are very strict in that it requires at least 15 years of management experience with the previous 5 years as an assistant or general manager for high-volume golf, restaurant, or hotel environments.

The pay is going to be pretty low, at your state’s minimum wage or slightly more. However, it’s a great first job to get your feet wet and to find out what it feels like to work hard for a living!

Does Topgolf drug test?

Topgolf does not usually drug test hourly applicants before they are hired. For salaried positions, however, you can expect a thorough background check as well as a drug screening.

  • 401k
  • Accidental death and disability insurance

  • Associate discounts

Final Thoughts

There aren’t many jobs that can be as much fun as this one. Whether you’re working an hourly position or in management, a position at Topgolf guarantees that you’re gonna be very busy and active throughout the whole workday.

This is the type of company that’s well-suited for someone who is active and does not mind working in a fast-paced environment. A job here is definitely not for an introverted person or one who doesn’t necessarily like large crowds or interaction with many people at a time.

Management Needs Work

Management plays a critical role in this company and according to many reviews from past and present workers, managers’ performance falls a little flat.

It’s unfair to pinpoint a reason why this is allegedly happening but the complaints are that managers play favorites and some are lacking in knowing how to treat their employees. In my experience, when many people complain about management, it’s because there is a problem with either the culture of the company or the lack of training.

This can actually be a positive for anyone trying to get into an entry-level position and subsequently progress into management. There’s a great chance this company is looking for someone as qualified and talented as you.

Hourly workers are going to find a job at Topgolf as a great experience due to the constant interaction with customers. Even though the pay is not great, this is common for jobs that tend to attract younger employees.

Supervisory jobs are going to have plenty of challenges because as a manager, you’ll be dealing with mostly younger employees.

All in all, Topgolf careers seem to have a promising future. A job here is definitely worth considering if having fun while on the job is your thing or if you spire to move up to a management position.
